Shikatani Lacroix Wins Three GOOD DESIGN™ Awards

Shikatani Lacroix was awarded three prestigious GOOD DESIGN™ awards by The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies.

The award honors innovative industrial, product and graphic designs from across the globe. Shikatani Lacroix has been recognized for its inventive Smartfood and Doritos 3D Evolution package designs and York Link logo.

“We want to thank the jury of judges who selected our work among submissions from the world’s leading design firms,” said Jean-Pierre Lacroix, President of Shikatani Lacroix. “We would also like to thank our clients, PepsiCo and York Region, for the opportunity to work with their remarkable brands and congratulate them on the success they’ve seen from our designs.”

The winning designs are now part of the Museum’s esteemed Permanent Design Collection and will be published in the GOOD DESIGN Yearbook for 2016-2017.

The packaging redesign for PepsiCo popcorn snack Smartfood helped modernize the brand’s image and introduced a number of new flavors for consumers to enjoy. Shikatani Lacroix balanced the brand’s eye-catching black packaging with large, bold imagery and color. Since the launch of the redesigned ready-to-eat popcorn, Smartfood has seen a significant increase in gross sales, particularly among the new flavor offerings.

When introducing Doritos 3D Evolution chips to the Canadian market, PepsiCo came to Shikatani Lacroix for a package design that would stand out on the shelves despite being smaller than regular Doritos bags. The eye-catching design, inspired by video game graphics and based on extensive market research, became an iconic part of the Doritos 3D Evolution limited edition packaging.

York Region was having trouble differentiating itself from similar Southern Ontario municipalities when Shikatani Lacroix stepped in to develop a campaign to celebrate what makes the region unique. The bold lines and colorful nodes of the new York Link logo represent the main centers and corridors of York Region and help create a definitive, memorable vision for the brand. The initiative has been well received by both developers and economic development officers.
